  • Construction Bid Process Update (June 26, 2014)
    • At their June 23 Regular Meeting, Council directed staff to proceed with a post-tender addendum to the two low bidders in accordance with the recommendations from the British Columbia Construction Association and Vancouver Island Construction Association. The post-tender addendum process will last 2-3 weeks.
    • The low bidders are Windley Contracting Ltd. and Knappet Projects Inc.
    • Construction of the new Fire Hall will begin later this summer.

  • November 13, 2013 - Fire Hall Public Information Meeting and Open House:

    Please join Town Council, staff and consultants for a Public Information Meeting 7pm Wednesday, November 13th at the Civic Centre, 747 Jones Street. An Open House will be held at the current Fire Hall (Harlech and Primrose Streets) between 12noon and 6:30pm for members of the public who wish to tour the existing hall in advance of that evening’s Public Information Meeting.

    The Public Information Meeting will provide the public with an update on the project, including an overview of the new Fire Hall development process. Plans for the proposed Fire Hall will be available for viewing and comment.

  • Shaw TV filmed their October 18th edition of Go! Island on-location covering the Fire Hall Planning project. The 12 minute video is in segments and includes footage on:
    • the constraints of the existing Fire Hall,
    • the role the Fire Department plays in the community as a volunteer organization, and
    • the aspects considered for the proposed new fire hall location at Berwick, near the roundabout.

  • October 7, 2013 Regular Council Meeting:
    P. Huntsman, Town’s consultant, cultural development and communications, confirmed that Shaw TV will be hosting their Go! Island Report from Qualicum Beach on October 17, 2013, that will feature the new Fire Hall project, visiting the existing facility, the proposed new Fire Hall location, and the Qualicum Beach Museum’s display on the history of the Fire Department. The coverage will result in an 8-10 minute video accessible to the community through You Tube in advance of the November 13th, 2013 Public Information Meeting.

  • August 14, 2013 Update:
    • To ensure that the community is kept informed on the progress for the proposed new Fire Hall in Qualicum Beach, the following communication actions will take place as approved by Council at their August 12, 2013 Regular Council meeting:
      • Bi-weekly updates posted to the Fire Hall Info Page on the Town’s website ( and Facebook page;
      • Major announcements and project milestones announced via news releases;
      • Email notice to the Town’s distribution list in advance of any public meetings; and
      • A large notification sign will be posted at the future site to communicate the basic conceptual elements of the fire hall and opportunities to stay informed an engaged.
    • Council approved staff's recommendation to apply for specific green targets for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund grant program including:
      • 75% energy reduction; 25% water consumption reduction; the use of site-milled timber for construction and to explore further green options for design and construction.

  • At their July 8, 2013 regular meeting, Council voted to:
    • Award the architectural services contract for the proposed new Fire Hall project to Johnston-Davidson Architects
    • Approve the Terms of Reference for the Fire Hall Working Group that will advise on the design and construction process, facilitate community information meetings and report regularly to Council. The Working Group is composed of the Chair (Walter Hoogland, Town’s Consultant/Project Manager), four members of Town staff, a representative from the RCMP and three community members. Advisory persons to the Working Group include the architect appointed by Council, project contract engineers, and additional groups and agencies. Council added that the Council member assigned to the Area of Interest of Protective Services may attend Working Group meetings as a liaison, with no participation.

  • At the June 24th Regular Meeting, Council directed staff to:
    • Solicit a proposal from Carsten Jensen Architects, Ted J. Thomas of O. Solony Architect Ltd. for architectural and professional services for consideration at the July 8, 2013 Council meeting.
    • Work with the Town’s project manager Walter Hoogland to provide to Council a terms of reference and recommended membership for a fire hall design committee.

  • Council, at their May 6 Regular Council meeting, directed staff to invite Johnston - Davidson Architects to prepare a proposal for the design and construction of a new fire hall utilizing a design-bid-build project delivery process.
