Chipping Program

Chipping Program

There are two chipping pickups annually, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Town staff bring the chipper machine and pick up material in your area according to a predetermined schedule. The route has been split into 2 zones, all properties east of Memorial Avenue and those west of Memorial Avenue.
  • WEST side of Memorial Avenue - please have materials to the curb by 8:00 am, OCTOBER 9th
  • EAST side of Memorial Avenue - please have materials to the curb by 8:00 am, NOVEMBER 5th
        If you are unsure of your location in relation to Memorial Avenue, please contact the Town Office at 250.752.6921. To ensure timely pick-up please ensure the following:
        • Only one pile of trees, branches, and other woody shrub materials will be picked up per property;
        • Grass clippings, leaves and soft plant materials such as perennial or annual flowers will not be picked up;
        • Piles to be chipped shall be a maximum of 8ft x 8ft x 5ft high. Materials in excess of this will not be picked up;
        • Piles with gravel, dirt or roots covered with dirt, will not be picked up;
        • Four (4) inches is the maximum diameter size of wood waste that can be chipped;
        • Material over four (4) inches will not be picked up;
        • Stack branches at the roadside with butt ends facing the same direction;
        As the chipper only travels each street once, be sure your branches are on the boulevard by 8:00am the day of your designated schedule. Subject to the volume of material and any mechanical problems the Town may encounter, some pick-ups may be delayed.

        The following number of piles may be left for chipping during each period based on the following:

        • 1 Pile - Properties up to 0.5 acres (0.2ha)
        • 2 Piles - Properties greater than 0.5 acres and less than 1.0 acres (0.40ha)
        • Properties over 1 acre (0.40ha) may for each additional 0.5 acres (0.20ha) leave an additional pile

        Please note that larger volumes and/or sizes of wood waste material may be taken to the Regional District of Nanaimo Transfer Station located at 860 Church Road, Parksville. Telephone 250-248-5254 for rates and further information.

        Where do the branches go once collected by our staff?

        All collected material is transported to a local compost company 'The Earthbank' where it is chipped and used for compost. Products can be purchased from The Earthbank by the general public.
