Backyard Poultry

Backyard Poultry

Chickens

Since 2016 Council has been exploring the possibility of allowing backyard poultry in the Town. A pilot project was conducted in 2017, and staff launched a survey in September 2021. Results and concerns were reviewed, including issues with rodents, public health, and noise. Staff also conducted research on similar municipality bylaws for possible options.

In April 2022, Council approved the keeping of chickens and ducks (maximum 6), in specific residential areas, provided a license is obtained (and annually renewed), and the following guidelines are followed:

  • Minimum parcel size is 1,000m²
  • Backyard Poultry means the keeping of chickens and ducks, up to a maximum of six, provided that there are no roosters, cocks, cockerels or peacocks
  • Within the zoning areas R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, R14, R15, R16 and R17
  • Setbacks and sizes for coops and runs
  • Slaughter and sale of products
  • Storage of food
  • Management of manure
