A project to realign Grandon Creek culverts
& enhance fish passage.

This project was in co-operation with Town of Qualicum Beach,
Comprehensive Fisheries Development Corporation and the Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers.
Two dogleg culverts at the mouth of Grandon Creek have long been
identified as barriers to fish passage. This is particularly unfortunate because
the upstream habitat and riparian areas have been preserved in a pristine and
natural state through the foresight of previous administrations.

The first culvert under the Island Highway structurally failed
and was replaced by a precast box culvert restored with a natural stream channel
through it. The funding, timing and coordination were all unconventional and required
vision and cooperation by all parties. The second phase involves the sinking of
4 vertical caissons to a depth of 4-6m interconnected with 1200 mm circular concrete
pipe with fish baffles. The project was undertaken utilizing Town of Qualicum
Beach forces, labour through the Comprehensive Fisheries Development Corporation
and funded to date largely through numerous grants obtained by the Qualicum Beach
Streamkeepers Society.
