| Qualicum Beach Wins
2003 Communities In Bloom
International Challenge
On September 27th, 2003, the City of Stratford, Ontario hosted the 9th
edition of the Communities in Bloom National Awards Ceremony honouring municipalities
from each Province and Territory across Canada as well as cities from countries
around the world. Communities in Bloom recognizes community participation
in landscape beautification, heritage conservation and environmental awareness
while celebrating pride of community and country.
In the medium sized category, Qualicum Beach paired with Dyce Scotland
and won the "International Challenge". Both the Town of Qualicum
Beach and Dyce Scotland received the coveted 5 blooms from the judges
and also received Special Mention for Community Involvement.
The municipalities were judged based on the efforts in management, planning,
maintenance, improvement and innovation in the following:
- Tidiness Effort
- Environmental Awareness
- Community Involvement
- Natural and Architectural Heritage Conservation
- Urban Forestry
- Landscaped Areas
- Floral Displays
- Turf and Ground Cover Areas
- Twinning Effort
The Communities in Bloom judges stated that "Community involvement
is a way of life in Qualicum Beach. Just about everybody in the community
is involved in one or more activities that benefit the town, and result in
an increase in the quality of life for its citizenry. The manner in which
the community rallied around Qualicum Foods, the Town’s only supermarket,
after the catastrophic fire literally burned the store to the ground, is
a human interest story worthy of national praise."
Those directly involved in the Communities In Bloom submission are worthy
of our sincere appreciation and congratulations for all your hard work.
