Tax Deferment Programs

The Property Tax Deferment programs are provincial government, low interest loan programs which allow qualifying owners to have the province pay their current property taxes on their behalf. The provincial government offers two tax deferment programs. ALL programs require that you:

  • Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Have lived in BC for at least one year prior to application;
  • Are eligible for the Home Owner Grant; and
  • Have a current fire insurance policy on the home.

Regular Property Tax Deferment Program - Offered to home owners who are 55 years of age or older, widowed, or disabled. The owner must have, and maintain, a minimum equity of 25% on their home.

Families with Children Property Tax Deferment Program - Offered to home owners of any age who are financially supporting a dependent child under age 18. The owner must have, and maintain, a minimum equity of 15% on their home.
