QUALICUM BEACH COMMUNITY PROFILE -

The greying of the population will likely also mean changing
recreational requirements as older people stay active longer than in previous
generations. There will be an increasing need to supply activities and services
that cater to the interests of seniors, including walking trails, golf courses,
and other facilities more suited to the low intensity activities. Taxi and mini-bus
services will likely experience an increase in demand as individuals drive less.
Qualicum Beach, BC has also seen strong growth in the middle-aged component
(35-49 yrs) of its population. This is a significant factor given that this age
group typically makes up the largest component of the labour force, and often
purchases larger homes or begins renovating existing structures. The middle aged
component therefore represents a very important retail and home buyer segment
of the population, and its continuing growth represents a positive sign for the
region's retailers.
Like other sectors of the economy, tourism has evolved significantly over the past few years. Should current trends continue, the nature of tourism in the Qualicum Beach, BC will likely be noticeably different in the future than it was in the past. Historically, the region catered heavily to pass through travelers, to the visiting friends and relatives of residents, and to families coming to camp or spend a few days at the beach. Although these groups continue to be an important market segment, regional tourism planning should reflect consideration of the following trends:
- increased popularity of soft adventure
- growth in the number of travelers seeking
high quality accommodation, food and activity opportunities
- growth in the demand for package tours
- continuing growth among BC residents for
shorter, get-away vacations versus lengthier, more distant vacations.
- a gradual increase in the proportion of
international visitors
